Why do you think Gender Balance (on the sport board) is important?
Ilse, theSWinG mentee, believes “we can’t find them (women)” is just an excuse. Read the full answer :
"50% of our potential athletes are female and therefore should in some way be represented in decision making bodies within sports. The answer is easy, but in practice however it is not that simple and just like in any other sectors, like politics, business, education, it is a long term journey with ups and downs. Although we see an increase in female athletes, in women's competition on television (football, basketball, cycling, hockey), it is still rare to have female top coaches, female top officials (umpires, referees, etc) and female board members in sport federations. The drop-out of young women in sport is huge, and as such we miss role models at all levels. Women on sport leadership boards can make sure that a more systematic attention is given to gender equality and diversity. There should not only be an equal treatment in terms of athlete support and coaching, but also in terms of financial support and marketing efforts. Women on sport boards can also make sure that for every development plan (top athletes, top coaches, top officials) that is submitted all genders are represented and encouraged. And that the answer “we can’t find them” is just not good.
